Arik was livid.

It felt as though his blood was boiling inside of him. He was seeing red, basically, gritting his teeth as he tried in vain to keep a modicum of calm. A mixture of anger and annoyance in equal parts coursed through him. What sort of idiocy was this, to attack him, the chieftain of the dragons, and his mate at a time when they were about to be intimate?

In fact, Arik was quite sure the man he was facing was one of the bandits terrorizing his home.

Arik roared, rocketing upward into the skies and aiming to crash right into his attacker, who swerved to the right just in the last second and used his hind legs to kick at Arik.

A weak mate for a weak chieftain, the attacker’s voice echoed through his head. How perfect for each other you are! Tell me, how does it feel to know we’re sapping your resources and you can’t do anything about it?

Arik angrily lunged forward, slamming himself at full force into the dragon in front of him once more. Is that the best you’ve got? I’ve play-fought with the toddlers and they kick harder than you!

The pair of them wrestled in the air, tackling each other and constantly slamming their wings into each other’s bodies. Arik saw as the dragon reared back to shoot a ball of fire straight at him, but Arik swiftly dashed to the side and slapped the dragon away with a single, harsh flick of his wings.

You’re not even trying, his opponent spat out angrily. We will never bow down to weaklings. Long live the Council!

The dragon let out a powerful cry that Arik answered back in equal measure. He reared back his head, opening his maw and taking in a deep breath, filling the sac inside him with air. Then, he breathed out. A torrent of flame gushed forth from his mouth, harsh and powerful, searing scale and flesh.

There shall be no mercy given to those who willfully endanger their fellow dragon, Arik snapped, pulling back when he finally saw his attacker fall down, plummeting into the waters below.

Roaring in victory, he turned toward his mate. Kadan was frantically jumping up and down, waving his hands and trying to call his attention.

“Behind you!” Kadan called out. His voice was hoarse. Had he been trying to call to Arik this entire time? “Arik!”

What he didn’t realize, however, was that in his distraction, Arik hadn’t caught the message. Suddenly he felt something slam into his back, knocking him off his balance. It took him a moment to realize that he’d just been attacked by another set of dragons from behind.

Then, he felt something sear into his scales. Without any warning, blasts of fire and ball lightning seemed to wrack through his body, shot at him by the sudden, interloping dragons who had caught him by surprise.

Then, a swipe of claws against his body. Perhaps that was the most painful of all. Something was clearly in those claws raking into his back.
